Security forces opened fired early on Thursday after crowds attacked symbols of government in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s south-western Kikwit town, which is 500km (310 miles) from the capital, Kinshasa, Reuters news agency reports.

At least two people died in the melee, it quoted a local journalist and a UN source as saying.

Supporters of defeated opposition candidate Martin Fayulu also protested in the north-eastern town of Kisangani, Reuters reported
