Outgoing Malawi President Peter Mutharika of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Saturday, June 27, 2020 labeled the just ended elections the worst in Malawi’s history following irregularities that have been reported by his supporters in various parts of the country during the electoral process.

Addressing the news conference at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre, Mutharika disclosed that his party monitors were beaten, hacked, abducted and intimidated so that they should not participate in voting observation process.

The defeated leader said the results that were sent to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) are not a true reflection of the people since there were no DPP and UDF monitors to report irregularities.

The commission has however has dismissed DPP complaints presented to them.

Mutharika has therefore urged Malawians to be peaceful when the results are announced and respect the presidency which is a sacred office and the heart and soul of the nation.

In his remarks, Mutharika’s running mate, Atupele Muluzi disclosed that one of their assaulted monitors in the Central region, a female student, has died and about fifteen of them are still missing.

He has condemned the media for declaring winner in the election before the official body.

Unofficial results sourced show that Dr Lazarus Chakwera alongside Dr Saulos Chilima are leading the polls with 61%.

MEC is expected to announce official results for polls that took place on June 23, 2020.
